More than a hundred of participating delegates, national technical committee members, regional directors, KorPhil Davao faculty and staff and other TESDA officials gathered in a unified dinner during the fellowship night of the 2018, World Skills Philippines Davao City, at the Theater Hall of the Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center last Monday, April 30.

An array of sumptuous food which included the all-time Filipino’s favorite pork lenchon satisfied everyone’s craving while being serenaded with acoustic OPM rendered by the Davao Del Sur Live Band.

Song number exchange coming from the participating delegates of Ilocos Region, Northern Luzon, National Capital Region and Davao Region reverberated within the hall leaving the crowd in shared laughter and fellowship that helped them built new acquaintances and friendships.

In what may commonly considered as cup of tea of women, hairdressing and beauty therapy were dared by two men competitors from Ilocos Region who equally aimed gold finish in the pre-qualification selection process of team Philippines for the ASEAN Skills Competition happening in Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center Buhisan, Tibungco, Davao City on April 30-May 4, 2018.

Maxima Technical Skills Training Institute graduates John Leonard Ramos and Reylom Cruz fearlessly showed competence in skill No. 29 Hairdressing and skills no.30 Beauty Therapy, respectively.

Twenty year-old Ramos disclosed in an interview that he is unleashing his best to complete all the tasks incorporated in the test package though he admitted that the competition experience is slightly “nakaka-tense, nakaka-excite na kinakabahan ka, considering that his rivals also aimed top places in the game.
When asked who influence him on hairdressing, he openly shared that his father and brother are barbers who taught him initial techniques from which he honed through constant practice and countless hairdressing exposures since he was 15 years old.

“Family ng barber po kami, kaya hindi na bago sa akin ang pag-style ng buhok”, he said.

Ramos furthered that at first he only gave it a try but now he ended up loving more of it especially that he is earning from the payment of his friends and neighbors for hairdressing services.

On the other hand, Reylom Cruz he first appreciated beauty therapy told when he witnessed his high school classmate who also joined the 2015 provincial and regional in Ilocos.

Cruz proudly shared that being gay is his advantage since doing make-up is a skill he considered not just a pure hobby but also his most convenient source of income.

“Sumasideline ako pag may mga wedding hair and make-up, marami akong raket”, he said.

Cruz said that his family fully accepted him for being gay and supported him in his career as a make-up artist except his older who is much against who said that his make-up raket will not amount to anything.

“N’ung provincial at regional skills competition nabubuhay pa yung kuya ko, yong kuya ko na yon is hindi nya ako matanggap na ganito”, he added.

Cruz shared that he admitted himself as a BSBA student before, but he stopped for he does not feel happiness where his heart is longing to pursue beauty therapy considering that “dream ko ang pagiging make-up artist kaya pinush ko to”.

He also said he want his deceased brother to be proud of him proving that his make-up career is something that can make him into someone, hence he is giving his full blast in the competition in hope to the ASEAN stage.
