YMCA OF THE CITY OF BAGUIO, INC.
Serving the Youth, Family and Community

The Young Men’s Christian Association of Baguio was first organized in Antamok Mines, Itogon, Benguet on December 1, 1941, 30 years after the establishment of the YMCA of the Philippines in Manila. It had two storey building and a large gymnasium. John Hauserman who was the president of the mining company was the first President. During the Second World War, the Japanese occupied its building and eventually destroyed on September 1944.

In 1947, the local Association was re-established in Baguio. In due time, it was recognized and became one of the leading member Associations of the YMCA of the Philippines then headed by Dr. Everett Stanton Turner as the General Secretary. On the same year, Turner launched a campaign to solicit funds for the full establishment of Baguio YMCA.

By that time Dr. Jose Cariño, then the City Mayor of Baguio, accepted his appointment as the Chairman of the Committee of Management. At about this period, then Secretary of Agriculture and National Resources Juan G De Rodriguez successfully realized the acquisition of a choice piece of land in the Central Business Area of Baguio for the local Association. This piece of land is where the present YMCA Building now majestically stands.

The Pittsburg YMCA through its General Secretary, Mr. Urban Williams, gave a grant of $40,000.00 and the local (Baguio) populace raised some P25,000.00 for the construction of a building costing P105,000.00. the building was inaugurated on May 20, 1951 and for many years it faithfully cradled the youth of Baguio serving their physical, social, spiritual and intellectual needs.

The building was later demolished to give way to a concrete structure that now proudly stands amid the towering pines of Baguio as an enduring symbol of the noble mission and vision of serving the youth, family and community.

Today, the YMCA of Baguio, Inc. continue to transform young boys and girls into purposeful and responsible leaders of tomorrow by way of its diverse program offerings, activities and it will continue to play this vital role in building and shaping a nation peopled by men imbued with high ideals, committed to Christian principles and dedicated to the tenets of democratic living.
